Below is an excerpt from a recent “Canvas Rebel” interview about the business-side af my artwork: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What do you think it takes to be successful? Not only passion and perseverance but also the willingness to be vulnerable and be “shamelessly self-promoting.” You have to believe in yourself, be proud of your work, have a thick skin and be on fire to create. As Warhol allegedly said: “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Awesome – can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers. I am a fourth-generation Atlanta native. My work is a hybrid of painting and sculpture: large-scale assemblages of highly colorful, textural, hand-painted modules, including wooden circles, cubes, spheres and single panels. I work out of an expansive studio space in the lower level of my home in metro Atlanta and create artwork for hospitality, healthcare and corporate settings worldwide. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you ever had to pivot? In the 90’s I owned/operated Atlanta Yoga but my yoga career was derailed when I sustained an injury. To tame my “monkey mind”, I started creating artwork and became a self-represented artist. With the support of design and art professionals worldwide, my work is now included in 100’s of private and public art collections all over the planet. As they say: follow your bliss. Work hard. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭? I studied business marketing and was involved in the interior design industry for years before I discovered my artistic skills. I have spent years creating, experimenting, and developing my own “style” and am beyond grateful to call myself a “full time artist” for the last decade, collaborating with art professionals on projects all over the world. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? I describe my sculptural work as “minimalist forms with maximalist surfaces” and am perpetually inspired by the “masters” of contemporary art: shaped canvases inspired by Frank Stella, Donald Judd and Elsworth Kelly; black-grid surface “graphic” influenced by Piet Mondrian, Jean Dubuffet and Roy Lichtenstein; monumental scale and expansive use of contrasting colors echoing the vibe of Abstract Expressionist painters. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮? My art “process” is very mathematical, meticulous, methodical, and is calming to my overly anxious nervous system. I have practiced yoga and meditation for over 30 years and my work provides cherished time and space for mindfulness meditation consequent of thousands of hours of intense focus and repetition. The “purpose” of my work is to “enliven and uplift” so I strive for a sense of playfulness with highly chromatic, contrasting color combinations, and whimsical and lively compositions. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲? My life is creating art so “initiating” creativity is not a struggle for me. I have walls and closets full of art. My tips to others: just get into the studio, stop thinking and create. It sounds so simple but humans tend to be so self-critical and afraid to take chances or be judged. Like the late, great Andy Warhol said: “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”
